Shale Oil

COLOSSUS GROUP Unconventional Resources Team

Shale field development presents a unique set of technical challenges due to the unconventional nature of these reservoirs. Shale reservoirs are characterized by low permeability and the need for advanced extraction methods. Some of the key technical challenges faced in shale field development which we support our client with include:

  1. Reservoir Characterization: Shale reservoirs can be highly heterogeneous, making accurate reservoir characterization challenging. Understanding the geology and petrophysics of the reservoir is essential for effective development.

  2. Reservoir and Production Modeling: Accurate reservoir and production modeling is essential for predicting well behavior and optimizing field development. This requires advanced modeling and simulation tools.

  3. Fracturing and Stimulation Techniques: Shale formations require hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to create fractures in the rock and stimulate hydrocarbon flow. Optimizing the fracking process for maximum reservoir contact is technically challenging.

Other Shale Oil activities we support

The vast amount of data generated in shale field operations demands advanced data analytics and automation for real-time decision-making and optimization.

Overcoming these technical challenges in shale field development involves continuous innovation, the use of advanced technologies, and a commitment to best practices in reservoir engineering, drilling, completions, and production techniques. Successful development depends on a combination of technical expertise, operational efficiency, and a focus on environmental and safety considerations.

Our Solutions:

  • Stimulation (multilateral wellbores, inflow control devices)
  • EOR (steam injection, chemical injection, and water injection)
  • Fluid modeling
  • Flow Assurance

Shale oil production also comes with large amounts of associated natural gas. Associated gas often does not have a commercial market. Some of it is flared but environmental regulations dictate that only a small portion can be burned off at the wellhead. The issue of associated gas is already emerging as a problem for shale players, particularly in North Dakota’s Bakken.
